Business booms in Medicon Valley

SMEs in the region increased the workforce by 30% in 2001

Business daily newspaper Erhvervsbladet reports that SME biotech companies in Medicon Valley performed well in 2001. The approx. 100 companies already established in the region increased their combined workforce by a massive 30% during the year. World class research, well educated labour, innovatory skills and increasing interest from investors have combined to put Medicon Valley ahead in the intense global competition between biotech regions.

One SME preparing for explosive growth is Egalet A/S, which makes sustained release drug delivery systems to give patients a constant optimal drug dose. The company has just signed an agreement with construction company MT Højgaard for a DKK 150 mn research centre in Søborg, just north of Copenhagen. Egalet is keeping its knowledge base within Denmark, while bulk production will take place in Ireland at a factory due for completion this summer.
