Danish Internet Forum on genetic engineering launched

A government backed portal to stimulate debate on biotechnology and ethics is launched

A government backed initiative to increase knowledge and stimulate public debate on genetic engineering got under way this week with the launch of a new internet portal www.biotik.dk (the name is a Danish abbreviation of biotechnology and ethics). Operated by the Danish National Consumer Agency, the portal is part of a four year plan focusing on the ethical and political challenges posed by genetic engineering, and the issues that need to be considered in order to make informed decisions.

Nine Danish Ministries have formed a Task Force to prepare the ground for incorporating ethical principles into biotechnology regulation, decision making processes and public consultation. Although principally a Danish language website, the Biotik portal does feature content in English, for example key documents relating to the Danish action plan for biotechnology and ethics.
