Denmark leads Europe in biotech patent race

Denmark files more biotech patent applications per capita than its European competitors

Financial daily Børsen reports today that Denmark is the European leader for patent applications, on a per capita population basis. According to figures released in Brussels today at the Belgian-Danish Forum for Innovation in Biotechnology by EU Commission Research Manager Bruno Hansen, Denmark tops the list with 44 patent applications per million population, while Holland and Belgium take second and third place respectively. The EU average across the same 1996-2000 period was close to 10.

Denmark performs similarly well in attracting biotech investments from venture capital companies (measured on a per capita population basis), taking a top two position in the European league. Denmark's strong performance comes at a time when the European Parliament is putting the finishing touches to a programme with an anticipated DKK 16.7 billion (€ 2.3 billion, USD 2 billion) budget to support biotechnology research.
