Genzyme moves into Medicon Valley

2002.07.25
World leading biotech company Genzyme chooses Copenhagen for its Scandinavian HQ

Massachusetts based Genzyme, one of the world’s foremost biotech companies, is to set up its Scandinavian headquarters in Copenhagen. Genzyme, which has over 5,000 employees worldwide, develops and markets innovative gene substitution products and services. The company achieved a turnover of USD 1 billion last year. Genzyme considered the Swedish capital Stockholm as well as Copenhagen, but opted for the latter due to the Danish capital's more central location in Europe and its positioning at the heart of Medicon Valley.

Medicon Valley is one of the three largest medical and biotechnological growth centres in Europe and home to more than 60% of Scandinavia’s pharmaceutical industry. Industry heavyweights such as Pharmacia & Upjohn, AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk and Lundbeck have their domicile in the region as have 250 smaller and medium sized biotech companies, employing 40,000 people and generating annual exports of DKK 30 billion (USD 4 billion). In the biotech industry, the region has the highest turnover per capita in the world.
