Mobile phones surge 20% to overtake fixed net subscriptions

Mobile telephony statistics from Telestyrelsen for the last half 2001 are widely reported in the Danish media today. The number of mobile subscriptions has overtaken fixed net subscriptions for the very first time. Almost 74% of the country’s inhabitants now have a mobile phone subscription, while 72% have fixed net subscriptions. In the second half of last year, Danes sent 743 million SMS messages via mobile phones, a growth of 20% on the first half of the year. This however is seen as just the beginning of a huge surge in popularity, with SMS traffic this year expected to reach 1.7 billion bits. The number of broadband internet connections in Denmark is undergoing similar explosive growth. ADSL subscriptions doubled in the second half of 2001 to 152,000.
