New IT knowledge centre opens in Århus

Innovation Lab will provide a centre for product development by IT researchers and the business community

A new knowledge centre, Innovation Lab, has been officially opened in the IT cluster of Katrinebjerg in Århus. Internet Ventures Scandinavia, Århus County and Municipality, the Alexandra Institute and TDC (Denmark's biggest telecompany) are behind the initiative, and will provide DKK 8 million (USD 1 million) per year over the next 4 years. Innovation Lab will function as a focal point for researchers and the business community, and will enable private companies to develop product prototypes, especially in the area of Pervasive Computing. The news was reported by JP Århus and Børsen.

The first two projects have already started; Systematic Software Engineering, Falck and a number of Fire Authorities are working with researchers to develop an intelligent protective suit for firemen, which sends monitored pulse and temperature readings wirelessly to a receiving unit and warns of possible critical situations. The second project is running in cooperation with the IT company Personics, and involves wireless equipment for retraining brain damaged people in their own homes.
