Agroferm A/S starts construction of lysine factory in Esbjerg  

Agroferm says its new lysine factory in Esbjerg in Southern Jutland is expected to generate a profit in its first year of operation

Agroferm A/S has started construction of a DKK 24 million (USD 3.6 million) factory in Esbjerg in Southern Jutland for biotechnological production of the essential amino acid lysine which is used for feedstuff mixtures for pigs and poultry. The total investment in the factory including the fermentation equipment supplied by the Swiss company Ekato GmbH, amounts to approx. DKK 250 million (USD 37.5 million).


The demand for lysine on the world market is growing strongly and Agroferm's aim is to produce 13,000 tons annually at the new factory which is expected to be in full operation in the autumn of 2004. MD of Agroferm Vagn Maersk Hundeboell says that the company is expecting to turn a profit in its first complete year of operation. Five large investors have injected 80% of the DKK 101 million share capital (USD 15 million), namely Arla Foods, Elsam, DLG, Agroinvest A/S and the South African partner Bioproducts.
