DKK 45 million protein factory planned for Funen

Construction of a new plant for producing protein from natural gas or methanol is planned to start this summer

A Danish inventor and the MD of UniBio A/S are planning to build a DKK 45 million (USD 6.5 million) protein factory at Odense on Funen. The proteins will be produced from natural gas or methanol using a specially developed fermentation technique. UniBio is in cooperation with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) where researchers have further developed a technique which enables them to extract four times as much protein compared with a previously used technique. It is this new technology which will be employed in the planned factory.

The building contractor is the engineering company Rambøll and construction is expected to start this summer. Production start-up at the new facility is slated for 16 months later. Initially the factory will produce 5,000 tons of protein p.a. with a view to increasing output to a nameplate capacity of 15,000 tons p.a. One focus area is licensed production in the Middle East and Mexico where there is both a great need for protein and a plentiful supply of natural gas at affordable prices. The news is reported by daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
