Orange first with GSM location service in Denmark

2003.02.17
Orange is now offering its business customers the opportunity to track their salespeople, service staff and truck drivers using Orange's GSM net

According to Børsen Online, Orange is now offering its business customers the opportunity to pinpoint the geographical location of their salespeople, service staff or truck drivers. The system is called Basis Tracking and uses Orange's GSM net to constantly track the position of a given mobile telephone.

In urban areas the location radius can be as little as 200 meters while in rural areas it can vary from 500 meters to 2 kilometres depending on the density of the network masts. Basis Tracking is cheaper than known location solutions built on GPS technology, and when the system has been implemented each tracking will be no more expensive than the cost of an SMS. Basis Tracking has been developed by the Danish mobile application manufacturer Unwiredfactory.
