US owned company acquires Scandinavian Micro Biodevices

US owned Inverness Medical Switzerland GmbH gains the divested NKT subsidiary for DKK 32 million

The Danish NKT Group, whose business areas include manufacturing of power & energy cables and optical components, has sold its subsidiary Scandinavian Micro Biodevices (SMB) to the 100% US owned Inverness Medical Switzerland GmbH. The price tag was DKK 32 million (USD 5.1 million) comprising DKK 19 (USD 3 million) in cash and the rest in shares in the parent company Inverness Medical Innovations Inc.

The new owner produces and sells OTC healthcare products such as pregnancy testing kits. Inverness is especially interested in SMB's competencies in process technology for manufacturing biochips as well as its know-how concerning micro-scale handling of biological samples. The sale means that NKT has implemented its plan to concentrate its portfolio of development companies on photonics. The news is reported by daily broadsheet Berlingske Tidende and on NKT's website.
