Denmark's DNA Technology based in Science Park Aarhus, has developed a rapid test method for bird flu virus

DNA Technology based in Science Park Aarhus, has developed a rapid test method for bird flu virus. The method makes it possible to monitor the spread of the virus and thereby reduce the risk of a pandemic. The product, FluAVision, can detect influenza A-virus in five hours with a minimum of laboratory equipment. The diagnostic kit can differentiate between various substrains of influenza A, and in that way establish whether the lethal bird flu virus H5N1 is present.

Mette Munch, development manager at DNA Technology says that the company is currently introducing the new product and is testing a kit in Malaysia. "I don't want to put a price on the market potential, but it is substantial", she comments. The kit containing the necessary materials to make the test is packed in a small cardboard box which weighs just 1 kg.

"It is crucial that the analyses can be implemented rapidly, that they give accurate answers, and that they can be carried out with standard laboratory equipment, which enables tests to be conducted close to the source of infection", says Mette Munch. The news was reported by financial daily newspaper Børsen.
