Two Danish companies, Scanecotech and Ewire, yesterday presented a prototype of a new payment card which uses a thumbprint to identify the cardholder. The payment card has been developed and patented by Scanecotech, and is the world's first solution for card payments where the thumbprint is used to verify the cardholder without needing to change the existing infrastructure in payment terminals.

When the development of the new card has been completed it can be used in current Dankort (Danish payment card) terminals, as well as throughout the world where magnet strips are used.

Scanecotech and Ewire are currently in contact with card manufacturers to find a partner to complete the card development and put it into production. Torben Nordentoft, technical director of Scanecotech's Center for Advanced Technical Studies in France, expects the card to be mass produced in a year's time. The news is reported by national daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende.
