Denmark is the highest placed European country and the world No.2 in the UN's E-government Readiness Index 2004. In the world rankings, USA took the top spot followed by Denmark, Great Britain, Sweden and South Korea. The UN surveyed the digital readiness of 191 countries, which is based on the amount of public information available to citizens on the internet – an area where most countries have developed strongly in recent years.

According to the UN, economic and social empowerment rests on the ability to access and utilize information and knowledge to widen individual choices for political, economic, social, cultural and behavioural decisions. ICTs are seen as the conduits which transmit information and knowledge. "By integrating technology into development planning, more effective and speedy solutions can be found for economic growth and sustainable human development", says a UN announcement. The news is reported by Computerworld.
