Denmark's Vestas Wind Systems, the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer, has gained an order for 24 V90-3.0 wind turbines for a wind power plant in Sicily, Italy. The order was placed by Allianz Group, an international services provider which has acquired the project from the German developer WKN Windkraft Nord and Aerosol, a Sicilian company. The turnkey project comprises a service agreement. Commissioning is planned to start in April 2007.
Paolo Tabarelli de Fatis, president of Vestas Mediterranean East is pleased that Vestas received Italy's first V90 project. "When the wind power plant is completed it will be one of the biggest wind power plants in Italy, and this clearly demonstrates Vestas' strong position and competitiveness on the Italian market". The 72 MW wind power plant will generate enough power to cover the annual electricity needs of more than 46,500 households, and will save the environment an annual emission of 72,000 tons of CO2.
Vestas Wind Systems has installed more than 26,000 wind turbines in more than 50 countries worldwide. The company employs 9,600 people and has production facilities in Denmark, Germany, India, Italy, UK, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Australia. In 2004, Vestas Wind Systems generated revenues of DKK 19.1 bn (USD 3.3 bn). The news was reported by financial daily newspaper Børsen and on Vestas' website.
