Inropa has developed a computer programme for robots which can organise a robot's painting procedure on an item by means of offline 3D scanning while the robot continues to carry out work on other items

Inropa, a Danish development company based in northern Jutland, has developed a computer programme for robots which can organise a robot's painting procedure on an item by means of offline 3D scanning while the robot continues to carry out work on other items. Henrik John Andersen, the founder of Inropa, says that nowhere else in the world has such a programme been successfully developed.

Sauer-Danfoss is one of the first companies which has installed the Inropa programme and a 3D scanner. The system is in use at its hydraulics motor factory. Previously it took up to 5 hours for an operator to manually programme the robot to paint a new type of motor, and the whole system would meanwhile be out of operation, creating a bottleneck in production. Now the 3D scanner and the programme handle the process offline, while the painting robot continues to produce. The painting is only interrupted for a few minutes when the newly created painting procedure has to be tested before putting into use.

Henrik John Andersen says Daimler-Chrysler, one of the world's major automotive companies, is showing interest in the product: "Daimler-Chrysler is currently testing our solution on their truck chassis and the first three tests have been successfully carried out. The painting quality is close to satisfactory. Daimler-Chrysler has looked all over the world, and its only opportunity for getting a programme which can feed robots was from us. The company makes many different versions of trucks from the same basic model, and so it is important that the painting procedure can be designed rapidly and automatically."

The news was reported by professional journal Ingeniøren (The Engineer).
