Denmark is playing a vital role in Microsoft's plans to launch a finance management programme for mobile phones and PDAs aimed at people who are on the move such as sales staff. The business software is being developed by Microsoft Mobility Unit, part of Microsoft Development Center Copenhagen. Microsoft Mobility Unit has been set up by Bjarne Schøn, who sold the idea to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer a year ago.

The idea was to further develop the successful Navision programme [Microsoft acquired the Danish company Navision in 2002 – Ed], a finance management system which together with Axapta has been renamed Dynamics, so that it can be used on advanced mobile phones. Bjarne Schøn and his staff had received numerous inquires from Navision customers and dealers who wanted mobile access to Navision so that sales staff could key orders directly into their company's IT system.

Microsoft Mobility Unit was established, and in October last year their first solution was unveiled. It has been tested by Kims, a Danish snack manufacturer. 70 sales staff at Kims have been equipped with mobile sales units giving them access to the company's ERP system. The test results have shown that Kims sales staff can visit 10% more customers with the new system in operation because of easier reporting.

Bjarne Schøn comments: "Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have looked at the Kim's project in detail and they are very enthusiastic". Bjarne Schøn is currently seeking new staff for Microsoft Mobility Unit. The plan is to launch the mobile solution this year. The news was reported by national daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende.
