Denmark puts state funding into research to make fuel cells cheaper  

Risø National Laboratory will get DKK 25 m to conduct research into finding cheaper electrode materials for fuel cells and other electrochemical devices
Risø National Laboratory has been granted DKK 25 m (USD 4.4 m) over a six year period by the Danish Council for Strategic Research to conduct research in electrochemistry with a view to finding cheaper electrode materials. The work will be done by Risø's Strategic Electrochemistry Research Centre (SERC), and involves participants from both universities and industrial partners.
Although electrochemical cells are usually thought of as power sources –  such as fuel cells which produce electrical energy from hydrogen – they can also be designed to work in the opposite direction and produce e.g. hydrogen from water using surplus electrical energy. These so-called electrolytic cells can also be used as exhaust gas purifiers, electrochemical filters and gas sensors.
The principal aim of the research at SERC is to find cheaper electrode materials and new combinations of material that will reduce the cost of electrochemical cells and provide more competitive solutions for industry.
A core principle in the research is to make certain it is clear how acquired knowledge can be applied in practice. All work will involve ”Proof of Concept” milestones so that the companies involved can be assured of gaining value from their participation.

Participants include the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Southern Denmark, Lund University in Sweden, PBI-Dansensor A/S, Dinex A/S, IRD Fuel Cells A/S, DONG Energy, Videometer A/S, DME - Danish Micro Engineering A/S, Haldor Topsøe A/S and Topsoe Fuel Cells A/S.
