The British Crown Estate has given Denmark's Dong Energy the right to develop an offshore windfarm off the east coast of England with a capacity of up to 240 MW
The British Crown Estate has given Denmark's Dong Energy, a leading energy group in the Nordic region, the right to develop an offshore windfarm off the east coast of England with a capacity of up to 240 MW. The Westermost Rough offshore windfarm site covers 35 km2 of seabed. The development programme will run over a number of years starting with essential environmental studies in connection with the statutory consents process. If approved, Dong Energy is likely to start construction in 2012-2013.

Rob Hastings, director of Marine Estates at The Crown Estate says: "We were very encouraged by the interest we received for Westermost Rough, resulting in a highly competitive tender process with very strong contenders. The site was awarded to Dong Energy based on their clear and unconditional commitment to progress the development of the site. We are confident that the combination of this commitment and Dong Energy's demonstrated capability in the UK offshore wind sector will bring this project back on track."

Gert Hemmingsen, head of UK renewables activities at Dong Energy comments: "We are very pleased to have been selected by The Crown Estate as the preferred bidder to develop the Westermost Rough site. It will provide further stability in the pipeline of projects that we are progressing through to construction and operation."

Dong Energy was founded in 2006 as the result of a merger of six Danish energy companies -  Dong, Elsam, Energi E2, Nesa, Copenhagen Energy’s power activities and Frederiksberg Forsyning.  Dong Energy employs approx 4,500 people and generates revenues of DKK 36 bn (USD 6.5 bn). The news was reported by professional journal Ingeniøren (The Engineer) and in a press release from The Crown Estate.
