Germany's Acticom Mobile Networks has licensed a technology for compressing SMS texts from Aalborg University
Germany's Acticom Mobile Networks, which develops software products and mobile applications for mobile handset platforms and network systems, has licensed a technology for compressing SMS texts from Aalborg University. Acticom will invest a significant sum in developing products based on smsZipper technology. Further details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
SmsZipper is a programme for mobile phones which can compress text message content by as much as a third. The programme needs to be installed in both the sender's and the receiver's mobile phone.
Acticom Mobile Networks plans to standardise the product so that it can operate on all current types of mobile phones. Peter Rasmussen, technology transfer manager at Aalborg University's patent and contract unit, says Acticom also wants to build further functionality into the technology.
SmsZipper has been developed by the Center for TeleInFrastruktur (CTIF), Aalborg University. The centre conducts research in wireless communication technologies and teleinfrastructures. The news was reported by professional journal Ingeniøren (The Engineer) and on Aalborg University's website.
