Norway's Telenor, one of the leading Nordic telecompanies, has signed an agreement to acquire Tele2 Denmark for DKK 835 m (USD 150 m). The acquisition comprises 227,000 mobile customers, 76,000 broadband customers and 173,000 fixed net customers. Telenor also owns Sonofon, one of Denmark's largest mobile phone operators and Cybercity, a leading Danish broadband supplier.

Morten Karlsen Sørby, managing director of Telenor's Nordic operations says: "Our Danish management and organisation are achieving well, and the acquisition of Tele2 is yet another step in the right direction to ensure continued growth. Telecommunication is about volume and the acquisition enables us to exploit economies of scale in both our mobile and broadband companies in Denmark and the Nordic region."

Tele2 Denmark will continue as an independent brand in the short term until the company's activities and staff are integrated into Telenor's other Danish activities.

The acquisition increases Telenor's total share of the mobile market in Denmark from 23.3% to 27.9%, and of the broadband market from 9.7% to 14.5%. The news was reported by professional journal Ingeniøren (The Engineer).
