Aalborg Industries sees cleantech as route out of recession

Aalborg Industries is increasing its focus on cleantech products that reduce the environmental impact of shipping
Aalborg Industries, a north Jutland based company which manufactures steam boilers, waste heat recovery boilers and heat exchangers for the marine sector, is increasing its focus on cleantech products that reduce the environmental impact of shipping.
It has already developed products to lower fuel consumption, reduce CO2 emissions and remove pollutants from marine engine flue gases. Now Aalborg Industries is developing a system for ballast water treatment in a JV with Germany's Aquaworx, reports financial daily newspaper Børsen.
As the global shipping industry prepares for tighter environmental regulations, Aalborg Industries sees cleantech solutions as an important part of navigating their way through the recession. Managing Director Jan Vestergaard told Børsen:
"We want to minimise our exposure to shipbuilding and aim to have a maximum of 50% of our business directly related to shipbuilding. So product development has high priority. Sooner or later we will come out of recession, and we want to be ready to take market share in environmental solutions."
Aquaworx already has a water treatment system for land-based installations. Aalborg Industries will now team up with Aquaworx to customise the system for the marine sector. How quickly they will be able to capitalise on this new area depends on how quickly an internationally-agreed 'ballast water convention' comes into effect.
