DONG Energy soon to inaugurate Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm

Denmark's leading energy concern DONG Energy expects to inaugurate the 91-turbine Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm, which will generate 209 MW, in mid-September
Thirty kilometres off the Danish coast in the North Sea, the world's largest offshore wind farm is nearing completion. National daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten writes that Denmark's leading energy concern DONG Energy expects to inaugurate the 91-turbine Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm in mid-September.

Towering 115 metres above the waves, each turbine will produce 2.3 MW, making the combined output 209 MW. The wind farm covers an area of almost 35 km2, and will be the world's first to have its own accommodation platform.

Horns Rev 2 is Denmark's 9th offshore wind farm, and is the result of a government decision from 2004 to build two more offshore wind farms. The other one, the 207 MW Rødsand 2 wind farm, is expected to be completed in 2010.

When Horn's Rev 2 comes on stream it will cover the electricity needs of around 200,000 Danish households, representing some 2% of Denmark's total electricity consumption. According to DONG Energy's own figures, the new wind farm has cost approx. DKK 3.9bn (USD 712m) to build.
