The Danish architects firm of Dissing + Weitling has won an international competition to design a new urban area of the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, that will include a financial district, writes Busines.dk. The new district, that places great emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental consciousness, is expected to begin officially in a few days' time when the Vietnamese Central Bank approves the project.

Dissing + Weitling partner Stig Mikkelsen told Business.dk: "It is a very large project, featuring a mixture of low-rise residential building and a series of high-rise buildings which will be occupied by financial firms in Hanoi."

Through the use of lakes, canals and special construction techniques, it is expected that energy use in the new urban district will be 40% lower than with corresponding conventionally designed urban areas. The new district will cover an area of 15 square kilometres, and will have a business and residential population of approx. 60,000 people.
