Record year for Jutland shipyard Orskov Yard

Orskov Yard in Frederikshavn posted 2007/2008 gross earnings of DKK 163.3m compared to DKK 96.4m for the previous financial year
2007/2008 was a record year for the shipyard Orskov Yard in Frederikshavn in northern Jutland. Gross earnings were DKK 163.3m (USD 28.5m) compared to DKK 96.4m (USD 16.8m) for the previous financial year, reports financial daily newspaper Børsen.
Orskov Yard has also been making the best of the good times by buying buildings, docks, cranes and slipways from Frederikshavn Maritime Business Park as a form of future-protection. Since it was founded six years ago, the shipyard has concentrated on service and repair rather than on newbuild, with Norwegian shipping companies providing the bulk of its customers.
Jeppe Ørskov, managing director of Orskov Yard, is in no doubt that although recent times have been good, tougher times lie ahead. He told Børsen: "Right now we are not seeing the effects of the financial crisis, but it is clear that when ships start being laid up, we will notice it."
Meanwhile, Ørskov is aware that Norwegian shipyards could pose a threat if they switch from newbuild activities to Orskov Yard's core business of service and repair. "Time will tell," he says. "We must be ready to react and keep our eyes open."
