Gates Foundation on the lookout for research

to improve global health - apply now

2012.10.09

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is inviting researchers to apply for new grant opportunities within life sciences. 7 November is the deadline.

Grand Challenges 2012

In the battle to improve people’s health all over the world, the Gates Foundation has previously invested in Danish medical research.

Now the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest private philanthropic foundation in the world, is looking for applications for its Grand Challenges Explorations initiative, a USD 100 million grant initiative encouraging innovation in global health and development research. Anyone with a transformative idea is invited to submit an application. Grants are awarded against a set of specific topics such as new approaches for the interrogation of anti-malarial compounds and design of new approaches to optimize immunization systems. Read all topics here.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which works “to help all people lead healthy, productive lives”, has previously invested in Danish research within vaccines against tuberculosis - a disease which still poses a major threat to health in developing countries.

Last year, at a global tuberculosis conference taking place in Denmark, the Gates Foundation invited world-leading researchers to brainstorm on how to solve the challenge of creating a vaccine for tuberculosis.

Denmark is already a European leader in drug development and has the third largest commercial drug development pipeline in Europe in absolute numbers. Medicon Valley, one of Europe’s top three sites for biotech innovation alongside Cambridge in the United Kingdom and Basel in Switzerland, spearheads the Danish biotech cluster with a strong presence and close collaboration between universities, hospitals and companies.

Proposals are being accepted at www.grandchallenges.org/explorations through 7 November 2012.
