Shionogi has chosen Denmark because of the strong research competencies at Danish universities which are a key element behind the leading position of the Danish pharmaceutical industry.
Thanks to the new MoU with Shionogi, Danish researchers from Aalborg, Aarhus, Copenhagen and Southern Denmark University as well as from the Technical University of Denmark can now apply for collaboration of research by the Japanese pharmaceutical.
Isao Teshirogi, Ph.D., president and CEO at Shionogi & Co. sees a great potential in Danish research:
“Denmark has the ‘Medicon Valley’, one of the famous bio clusters in Europe, and many bio-venture companies as well as academic institutions actively promote research and development within life science and biotechnology. We are greatly honored to have an opportunity to form cooperative research relationships (…). We expect it to foster international human resources by interacting with researchers with cutting-edge knowledge. Taking advantage of this opportunity, we will accelerate our globalization based on research and development.”
Exploring research and business opportunities in Denmark
Invest in Denmark and Copenhagen Capacity have been in dialogue with Shionogi for several years and in 2011 the Japanese pharmaceutical signed an agreement with the Danish Embassy in Tokyo to promote joint research opportunities between Danish universities and Shionogi. The just-signed cooperation agreement with five Danish universities is the first concrete outcome of this intend, and it was celebrated with a ceremony and reception at the Japanese ambassador’s residence in Copenhagen.
The Danish Minister for Trade and Investment Pia Olsen Dyhr says: “I am convinced that Shionogi will benefit from their agreement with the Danish universities and pleased that they have chosen Denmark for the SHIONOGI Science Program. We have a strong life science cluster and very innovative, skilled researchers in Denmark – the perfect place for a research-driven pharmaceutical company like Shionogi.”
