Design Studio Chooses Denmark to Tap Into Strong Design Traditions

2017.11.27

The London-based design studio Upton-Hansen Architects establishes a presence in Copenhagen to explore and consolidate its position on the Scandinavian market. The opportunity to contribute to the emerging trend of taller buildings in Denmark with international expertise in high-rise developments was a key driver.

Having a physical presence in Denmark, is a natural progression for the studio established in 2011 by Dane Jonas Upton-Hansen, who over time has developed a design approach which merges Danish and Scandinavian design with a more recognisable international style, resulting in striking and iconic developments across three continents. Furthermore, the ease and transparency of doing business in Denmark made it an attractive market for the studio to explore.

With the opening of UHA Denmark, the company plans to further develop its unique design approach, with a specific focus on exploring the Danish social approach to housing in the context of high-rise building design.

Global demand for Danish competencies

According to Peter Gram Jørgensen, Senior Associate in Upton-Hansen Architects, Danish architecture has a uniqueness to it, which is in high demand on a global scale. Hence, the decision to establish an office in Copenhagen was primarily based on an urge to connect with Danish companies and consultancies.

“Danish expertise within for example sustainability, resource management and architectonical detailing is remarkable. By establishing a local presence and collaborating with Danish companies and consultants, we are able to build bridges between Danish knowledge and the international expertise we have gathered from our projects around the world,” Peter Gram Jørgensen explains.

Already within the first year of operating, the design studio is benefiting from the unique Danish approach to design:

“The experience so far has been enjoyable and stimulating. We have been able to form fruitful collaborations and secure new interesting and challenging work whilst both learning and contributing. Our ongoing work in Denmark is definitely providing us with strategic advantages on other markets including the UK.”

Design hub with a global outlook

The establishment of internationally acknowledged companies in Denmark not only create jobs and growth but also contributes to the continuous development of a strong cluster.

“Invest in Denmark is happy to welcome UHA’s design team to Copenhagen. This establishment clearly underlines Danish stronghold propositions within construction and architecture combined with traditional design values, which Denmark is globally acknowledged for. Being part of this design cluster contributing to green energy solutions, design and construction optimization is becoming more attractive to foreign companies,” says Jesper Evensen, Team Leader at Invest in Denmark.
