Danish toy manufacturer Lego has entered a collaboration with Microsoft regarding software which can be used to programme Lego's Mindstorms Nxt, the next generation of Lego robotics. Microsoft has released its first beta version of Microsoft's Robotics Studio. In addition to programming Lego's Nxt chip, the software makes it possible to build a virtual model of a robot and run a number of simulations of its mobility by means of PhysX software from Ageia Technologies.

Tandy Trower, head of Microsoft Robotics Group says in a press release: "Microsoft sees great potential in robot technology. We have been in contact with a wide range of leading robotics companies and educational institutions early in our development phase and are enthusiastic about the positive responses from the environment."

Søren Lund, director of the Lego's Mindstorms department says that Microsoft will help to further strengthen the value of robot technology. Lego expects to launch its Mindstorms Nxt in August, followed by a special version for use in schools in the autumn.

The Lego Group is a privately owned company headquartered in Billund, Jutland. It was founded in 1932, and is today one of the world's leading manufacturers of play materials for children, employing approximately 5,600 people globally. Lego products are sold in more than 130 countries. The news was reported by Computerworld.
