Denmark is world's least corrupt country, says Transparency International

(2008.06.27)

Hot on the heels of being named Europe's most peaceful country by The Economist, Denmark is judged the world's least corrupt country by Transparency International

There are many good reasons for investing in Denmark. The fact that it is the most peaceful country in Europe, and the second most peaceful globally – as was revealed last month by the Peace Index ranking from British business magazine The Economist – is one of them. Another good reason is that Denmark is the world's least corrupt country, and also the place where resistance to corruption is strongest.

This is the conclusion of the latest annual report from Transparency International, which this time around put special focus on corruption concerning one of the earth's increasingly threatened resources: water.

Huguette Labelle of Transparency International is quoted by national daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten as saying: "There exists no alternative to water, which is fundamental to our well-being, our food supply security, our energy future and our ecosystem. But the control of our fresh water resources is plagued with corruption worldwide."

It is the first time that the organisation has closely studied corruption in an area adversely affected by climate change and global population growth.

Water is also the special focus of the Expo 2008 world exhibition to be held in Zaragoza, Spain, this summer, and Denmark's presence there almost goes without saying. Denmark has extensive know-how in water technology and is dedicated to developing new technology to provide clean drinking water, purify waste water and forecast flooding.

This combination of factors - the growing importance of water in ensuring a sustainable future for the world, and Denmark's innovative and thriving water technology industry with many smaller, developing companies – is a powerfully persuasive reason for foreign investors to take a closer look at this business sector in Denmark.

And for any investor choosing Denmark, there is the reassuring knowledge that their venture capital is being set to work in a country that has a world-leading reputation for both peacefulness and transparency.
