Microsoft chooses Danish open source CMS for web development site

(2010.02.02)

US software giant Microsoft has chosen the Danish open-source content management system Umbraco for its ASP.Net site

Version2 reports that US software giant Microsoft has chosen the Danish open-source content management system Umbraco for its ASP.Net site, which is Microsoft's forum for the web development community. The website attracts millions of users and the new version will be launched in a month's time.

The seeds of the project were sown last year at the Microsoft Mix conference in Las Vegas, when Microsoft was shown some demos. Thereafter things went quiet for a few months, before Microsoft returned with the message that a pilot project was being started. The choice of Umbraco was reportedly due primarily to its flexibility, which was a key requirement for Microsoft.

The founder of Umbraco, Niels Hartvig, says: "[ASP.Net] is a site that has existed for many years and has been built up somewhat accidentally. For a long time it has consisted of many different software projects, rather randomly integrated. [Microsoft] found that they could import lots of content into Umbraco and make very clean interfaces between the various systems."

Hartvig sees Microsoft's choice of Umbraco as a recognition of the business model of his five-year old company, which focuses on creating a culture where people and companies share knowledge with each other.
